I work with women who have had to shift cultures — women who grew up in one culture and then built their lives in another, or who have moved between cultures, sometimes more than once. My interest in this work is also deeply personal. I spent 15 years living in India before returning to the Netherlands, and that experience has shaped the way I understand adaptation, belonging and being yourself. Moving to another country is about much more than learning a new language or finding your way around. It can mean learning new ways of relating, communicating and raising a family, while figuring out where your own values and needs fit into everything around you. For many women, this means navigating different expectations, relationships, family roles and ideas about who they are supposed to be. You adapt. You take care of things. You become very good at making everything work. And that is great. And it was for a long time. Till you break. Because, when you are busy navigating between what you have known and what is expected of you now, there isn't always much space to stop and question. Some of the things that were difficult in your old environment may never have had the opportunity to be worked through. Some of the new things may appear as a given, not worth fighting, but underneath, something still gnaws at you. Some of the things that happened might have been really hard. And, as you are immersed in the juggling act, and possibly had your focus on the cultures as the limiting factor, it is harder to see yourself too: Who are you? Forget the cultures, what are you about, yourself? When I work, I use EFT most of the time. EFT gives us a way to deeply acknowledge what is actually there — including emotions, needs and reactions that may have been pushed aside when there wasn't room for them. And sometimes, as those emotions, needs and reactions are finally seen, and their positive purpose — even when the strategy we chose was a little quirky, or the circumstances around us made healthy functioning incredibly difficult — is acknowledged, something else happens: a younger, more spontaneous self — the part of you that knew what she liked, wanted, felt and dreamed before she became so good at adapting — can begin to step back onto the stage. Not so that you can become who you were then, but so that you can bring some of that aliveness and knowing into who you are now. In my work, we don't try to think our way out of difficulties. We create space for the different parts of your experience, including the things that may seem contradictory, uncomfortable or difficult to explain. And this is the breeding ground for the new. We don't have to interfere here. Whatever emerges emerges. I offer a warm, curious and non-judgemental space. You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what is wrong or what you want to change. We can start with what is there. ---> is this good, I hope I don't promise things that I shouldn't promise. I like the piece myself. Except terrible errors I don't want to change anything. |
